In 2025, scientists from Emory University in the United States studied 29 countries, examining the level of loneliness among their populations. They found that Greece and neighboring Cyprus had the loneliest populations.

Slovakia and Italy are almost in second place in the ranking of lonely people. The United States should not be too proud, as it is in fifth place in terms of lonely people.

While research shows that older people are the loneliest, in the United States, the loneliest people are in their early 40s, from ages 40 to 60, compared to all other countries except the Netherlands.

The reasons for the high rate of loneliness in the United States among young adults have been attributed to several factors: being unmarried, unemployed, having mental health problems, and having physical health problems.

Here are the top 10 countries ranked as the loneliest among the 29 countries surveyed:

1. Greece

2. Cyprus

3. Slovakia

4. Italy

5. United States

6. Israel

7. Czech Republic

8. Romania

9. Bulgaria

10. Latvia.
